Former official of Azeri Defense Ministry detained at Moscow airport

MOSCOW, January 10. /ITAR-TASS/. A former official of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, accused of embezzling $125 thousand, has been detained at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport as he attempted to leave Russia.

The Russian Interior Ministry’s (MVD) main department for the Irkutsk region reported the detention of the suspect. He was detained in a well-coordinated operation of the Irkutsk department of Interpol and Russia’s MVD transport department at Domodedovo airport.

The detained is wanted in his country on suspicion of fraud. According to law enforcement agencies, in 2010, being an official of the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan, he forged accounting payment documents. His illegal actions inflicted damage of some $125 thousand on the ministry.

Fleeing from justice, the suspect in 2011 crossed the border of the Russian Federation under a different name with false documents. He later moved to the Khudoyelanskoe settlement of the Nizhneudinsky district of the Irkutsk region, where he found a job as a laborer.

During the search and investigation activity the policemen established his identity. Suspicious of surveillance, the suspect suddenly disappeared from the detectives’ view. Using their leads, operatives later found out that he was trying to leave Russia and took a transfer flight to Moscow.

“Officers of the Irkutsk Interpol unit immediately contacted colleagues from the Russian MVD transport department at Domodedovo airport, who arrested the suspect and placed him in a detention facility,” said the regional MVD department.
