Chinese helicopter takes first passengers of Akademik Shokalsky trappen in ice

SYDNEY, January 02, /ITAR-TASS/. Captain of the Russian ship, Igor Kiselyev, tells evacuation of passengers from the Akademik Shokalsky has begun.

“The helicopter has taken first twelve passengers at 20;08 local time /11:08 Moscow time/,” the captain said.

The helicopter is based onboard of the Chinese ship Xue Long.

The Akademik Shokalsky has 74 people aboard - a 22-strong Russian crew and 52 passengers, some of them researchers from the Australian Antarctic Expedition and others being accompanying travellers. The crew will remain aboard, and the passengers will be evacuated.
