There was no talk about Ukraine’s joining CU at Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting

“There were no expectations to this effect,” Peskov told the TV channel Dozhd

MOSCOW, December 24, /ITAR-TASS/. There was no talk about Ukraine’s joining the Customs Union at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian President’s press secretary, said. “There were no expectations to this effect [Ukraine’s signing the agreement on joining the Customs Union],” Peskov told the TV channel Dozhd.

The fact that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich did not attend the meeting was no surprise to the Russian side, he added. “We knew in advance that he [Yanukovich] would not be present at the meeting,” Peskov said. He pointed out that Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov attended the meeting and “participated in it in a general format.” Ukraine “is an observer country which has a huge volume of commercial and economic relations with all the countries in the Customs Union, so this is quite normal,” the presidential press secretary said.
