Russian, French diplomat call for convening Geneva conference on Syria as soon as possible

MOSCOW, November 23, 16:57 /ITAR-TASS/. Russian and French diplomats have called for joining efforts to convene the Geneva II Peace Conference on Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

Russia was represented by special envoy for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and the Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for the Middle East settlement , director of the ministry’s Middle East and North Africa Department, Sergei Vershinin.

The French delegation was led by director of the Foreign Ministry Middle East and North Africa Department Jean-Francois Guirault.

“The parties exchanged views on the Middle East issues with the focus on the situation in Syria. They stressed the need to continue and intensify efforts to settle the crisis by political means on the basis of the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012. The diplomats also called for convening the Geneva II Peace Conference as soon as possible,” the ministry said.
