The Olympic torch arrived in Buryatia’s capital of Ulan Ude at 09:00 local time (14:00 Moscow time) on Friday. A young married couple found itself in the midst of Olympic events.

Aldar and Valeriya Semyonovs had got married just minutes before an official stage of the Olympic torch relay race kicked off in the capital of Buryatia. The newly-weds did not miss a unique opportunity to take a picture with the Olympic flame, its guardians and torch bearer Yelena Matantseva, a physical training teacher, shortly after they had stepped out of the Wedding Palace on the city’s central square.

Matantseva had replaced Lyubov Volosova, the London Olympic Gamers bronze medal winner in women’s wrestling, at the Olympic torch race distance at the last minute. The married couple gave Matantseva a white silk scarf, a symbol of thoughts that are kind and pure in heart, as a gift. Yelena Matantseva is in her eighth month of pregnancy and is going to be a mother soon. She thanked the newly-weds for the gift and wished them a long and happy married life. “We did not plan to get married on a day when the Olympic torch arrives in our city in advance. It was just a coincidence. And this is our dearest wedding gift,” the young wife, Valeriya Semyonova, said.

Prior to arriving in Ulan Ude, it had visited the Ivlognisky Datsan (Buddhist monastery) where the imperishable body of the 12th Pandito Hambo Lama rests in peace.

The Olympic cauldron was lit up in Ulan Ude at 13:00 Moscow time on Friday. The ceremony is supposed to end with a concert and fireworks later on Friday.
