Astrakhan mayor taken into custody on bribery charges

MOSCOW, November 15, 14:37 (ITAR-TASS) - Moscow's Basmanny district court has placed Astrakhan Mayor Mikhail Stolyarov under arrest for two months on suspicion of taking a ten-million-rouble bribe.

Stolyarov refused to give evidence, the Russian Investigative Committee told Itar-Tass. As was earlier reported, he was ready to assist in the investigation.

According to the investigators' information, in October this year an Astrakhan businessman asked Stolyarov to provide a 3,000-sq-m area in Astrakhan to build an administrative building. Stolyarov agreed on condition that ten million roubles would be handed over to him and demanded to register that 25 percent in the charter capital would belong to his confidant. The Russian Interior Ministry's economic security department stopped the activities of Stolyarov. An investigator detained the mayor after he received the bribe.
