Russia praises OIC role in resolving global issues - Lavrov

It is the major international organisation after the U.N., the minister said

MOSCOW, November 5 (Itar-Tass) - Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia attaches significance to the role of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in resolving global issues and settlement conflicts in Moslem countries.

Speaking at a reception devoted to Islamic New Year on Tuesday, Lavrov said: “Russia prioritised conflicts in Islamic countries by developing close cooperation with our partners. The OIC sets apart.”

It is the major international organisation after the U.N., the minister said.

“We consider the OIC an authoritative international organisation,” he said, “The member-states play a weighty role in forming a new polycentric world order, in searching for responses to global challenges, in ensuring sustainable economic growth and in promoting an inter-civilised, inter-confessional and inter-religious dialogue.”

Lavrov said these goals could be achieved by joint efforts. “Thus, Russia and our Islamic partners seek to step up cooperation on the equal and mutually advantageous basis in order to improve mechanisms and forms of such cooperation,” the minister said.
