PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 18 (Itar-Tass) - Several populated localities in Kamchatka have been isolated as the Studenaya River has burst its banks due to the Kluchevskoi volcano eruption, the press service of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s (EMERCOM) department for the Kamchatka region reported on Friday.

Traffic paralized

Local ground traffic has been disrupted in the Kozyrevsk, Maiskoye, Klyuchi, Ust-Kamchats settlements with the total population about 12 thousand. According to the department, the road services have started the restoration of a 40-km automobile road section. They are expected to complete the work tonight.

Local aviation flights are also not performed to these settlements because of a blizzard and strong winds. Shiveluch Volcano in Kamchatka was assigned the highest aviation hazard level, the ‘red’ color code. Warnings were sent to all services providing flight safety in Kamchatka region. This was reported by the group of Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response KVERT.

River bursts its banks

Scientists believe that the Studenaya River has burst its banks due to the intensification of the Klyuchevskoi volcano eruption. The giant mount is spewing ash to a height of 10 km above sea level, seismic activity on it is intensifying, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) reported. A lava flow is coming down along the Kozyrevsky chute towards the Kozyrevsk settlement. “It has caused intensive melting of the Bogdanovich glacier, which increases the Studenaya River water level,” believe experts of the volcano observatory in the Klyuchi settlement. Kozyrevsk is located at a distance of more than 60 km from Klyuchevskoi, and there is no threat to it, experts say. The eruption of the Klyuchevskoi volcano is continuously monitored by scientists. They have assigned to it the red aviation colour code as it poses the highest hazard to aircraft. The eruption poses no threat to the nearby settlements, but there has been an ash fall in a number of villages of the Milkovo district of the region, located 80 km from the volcano, where the ash layer has reached 2 mm, the regional emergencies department reported.
