BAKU, October 9 (Itar-Tass) - The election team of Ilkham Aliyev has announced the victory of its candidate in the presidential election of Azerbaijan.
“A new stage in the life of Azerbaijan begins starting from today,” the head of the election headquarters, Ali Akhmedov, said.
“The people of Azerbaijan have voted for Ilkham Aliyev because they link their future development with him,” he said in front of the headquarters of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, addressing numerous people who got together in central Baku.
Traffic has been paralyzed in the city, with vehicles honking to welcome the result of the presidential election.
Exit polls fixed a landslide victory of Aliyev, who has received more than 80 percent of the vote.
According to preliminary data by the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission, 72.31 percent of eligible voters cast their ballot in the election. The voter turnout does not influence the result of the election, which is considered eligible under any voter turnout. The contender getting more than 50 percent of the votes is the winner in the election.
It is expected that the Central Election Commission will sum up the preliminary result of the voting by midnight. The official results will be announced within ten days.
