2 police officers killed in Dagestan shooting

The police were inspecting a car when unidentified men began to shoot at them, killing two officers

MAKHACHKALA, October 9 (Itar-Tass) - Two police officers were shot and killed in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, on Wednesday morning, a representative of the regional department of the Investigative Committee told Itar-Tass.

"The police were inspecting a car when unidentified men began to shoot at them, killing two officers. An investigation is underway," the Investigative Committee official said.

Criminal proceedings were opened over illegal acquisition and keeping of firearms and murder of law-enforcement officers.

Subsequent reports said the police had stopped a car for inspection. After checking the driver, they decided to check his passenger, too. But the man, after getting out of the car, pushed away one of the police officers, took out a pistol and opened fire. The attacker then fled in the same car," the Investigative Committee said.
