DUSHANBE, October 4 (Itar-Tass) - Delegates at the congress of the ruling People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan on Friday unanimously endorsed current head of state and party leader Emomali Rakhmon as candidate for the next presidential term, a party official told Itar-Tass. Polling is set for November 6. Last week, the Independent Trade Unions and the Youth Union at their assemblies also gave him their backing.
Seven of the republic's eight political parties are running in the presidential race, most having nominated their political leaders. Only the decision of the Islamic Revival of Tajikistan party can be described as a sensation. This nominated a woman, 65-year-old human rights activist Oinikhol Bobonazarova to head the state.
