PYONGYANG, September 16 (Itar-Tass) - Kim Jong Un, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), together with his wife Ri Sol Ju attended the current Asia Weightlifting Cup tournament here on Sunday. The team of the Republic of Korea (ROK) is also participating in the tournament.
The Korean Central News Agency reports that the Leader watched the competition of women weightlifters in the up to 63 kg and 69 kg weight categories. Sportswomen of the DPRK and China won gold medals.
The First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korean and First Chairman of the State Committee for Defence expressed confidence that this prestigiour international tournament "will contribute to sports cooperation and exchanges, as well as to the development of weightlifting".
While at the stadium, Kim Jong Un met with the directors of the Asian and International Weightlifting Federation, who arived in Pyongyang, and highly appreciated their efforts in arranging these competitions.
Apart from the teams of the DPRK and ROK, the tournament, which will continue until September 18, has drawn teams from Kazakhstan, China, Syria, India, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Myanmar, and Thailand.
The weightlifting competitions are held at the Pyongyang sport center named in honour of South Korean businessman Chung Ju-yung. In September 1999, during a thaw in relations between the North and South, he had participated in the foundation-stone laying ceremony as honorary chairman of the Hyundai Corporation.
