BEIJING, September 11 (Itar-Tass) - China hopes that the parties involved in the Syrian conflict will take an advantage of Russia’s offer to settle the crisis, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
“Russia put forth a proposal to settle the conflict. Under these circumstances this is a very important base to solve the problem. We hope that the parties will use this opportunity,” the diplomat said.
China lauds Russia’s new initiative. “We maintain contacts both with Russia and Syria. We favour the prohibition of chemical weapons and we seek to solve the problem by political means,” Hong Lei said.
“China upholds the role of the U.N. Security Council to settle the conflict by peaceful means. All actions by the U.N. Security Council should be based on the resolutions, which help ease tension in the region and resolve the Syrian crisis by peaceful means,” Hong Lei said.
