SUKHUM, September 9 (Itar-Tass) - Abkhazia's foreign ministry says the murder of a Russian diplomat outside his home on Monday was “an attempt against peace and stability in the Republic of Abkhazia, an act seeking to undermine strategic and fraternal Russian-Abkhazian relations and a provocative act aimed at causing political consequences.”
“Abkhazia is deeply shocked by the crime," a statement from the Caucasus republic's authorities said. "A cruel murder of the Russian diplomat is our common tragedy. Relations with the Russian Federation and Russian people are of absolute value for our people and those who masterminded and committed this horrible crime are the enemies of the people of Abkhazia and the future of our country. The criminals will be detained surely and convicted with all severity of the law.”
First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Abkhazia, Vice-Consul Dmitry Vishernev was killed while driving out of a garage in the building where he lived. His wife was also seriously wounded in the attack.
Abkhazian President Aleksander Ankvab assembled an extraordinary meeting to instruct law enforcement chiefs to use all resources to solve the murder.
