Sverdlovsk region prison riot masterminds get long prison sentences

Three of them to pay 450,000 rubles in damages to relatives of riot casualty

YEKATERINBURG, August 28 (Itar-Tass) - Sverdlovsk region court on Wednesday sentenced nine people who initiatiated a prison riot case to long prison terms.

"Nine defendants who staged mass disturbances in penitentiary #62 (town of Ivdel, Sverdlovsk region) in April of 2011, were sentenced to 6 to 13 years at maximum security prisons," a court spokesperson told Itar-Tass.

"Three of them will pay 450,000 rubles in damages to the relatives of the one riot fatality," she said.

The riot began on April 2, 2011. Investigator said several inmates, dissatisfied with the prison regulation and the conduct of their "colleagues," had started a fight, using sticks and planks. The conflict involved 100 to 150 inmates. One person was killed and another 14 were injured. Damage to prison property is estimated at around 600,000 roubles, the regional department of the Investigative Committee told Itar-Tass.
