Investigative Committee to supervise probe into hockey player's attack on police officer

MOSCOW, August 21 (Itar-Tass) - The Investigative Committee said it will monitor the probe into the criminal case over an Ak Bars hockey player's attack on a police officer. On August 18, Artyom Lukoyanov and his friend Maxim Gruzdev attacked two police officers in a restaurant in the town of Almetyevsk, Republic of Tatarstan.

Criminal proceedings were opened over use of violence of government representative, the Investigative Committee told Itar-Tass. "The Investigative Committee has such cases under special supervision and believes that all the persons who attack law-enforcement personnel in the performance of their duty should bear responsibility to the full effect of the law, regardless of their social group, social significance or sport achievements," it said.

The investigators said two policemen came to a restaurant in Almetyevsk after a panic button alarm. They offered Lukoyanov, who was in a state of alcoholic intoxication, to leave the restaurant. As Lukoyanov was walking out he suddenly attacked one of the police officers in the corridor and hit him on the head with his fist. His friend Gruzdev attacked the second policeman. The police had to fire two warning shots in the air to stop the attackers. The young people then were taken to a police station. One of the police officers was hospitalized with concussion.
