Russia calls on UN to expand cooperation with SCTO, SCO in anti-terrorism efforts

“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is making a serious contribution to ensuring stability and security in the Eurasian region,” Churkin said

UNITED NATIONS, August 7 (Itar-Tass) - Russia stands for close cooperation between the United Nations Organization and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as far as the struggle against terrorism is concerned, Russian permanent representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said on Tuesday during the debates at the United Nations Security Council dedicated to Un cooperation with regional and sub-regional organizations.

“The Collective Security Treaty Organization members are actively developing their own peacekeeper potential, including to be used in United Nations peacekeeping operations,” Churkin said. Along with that, the Collective Security Treaty Organization “is actively supporting international efforts on post-conflict development of Afghanistan, on neutralizing drug threats coming from that country.”

“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is making a serious contribution to ensuring stability and security in the Eurasian region,” he went on to say. “Its activities are important in the area of struggling against terrorism, separatism and extremism.” The organization has established a regional anti-terrorism structure, he noted, adding that it also develops cooperation in the area of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, anti-drug measures, counteracting transnational crime and ensuring international information security.

According to the Russian diplomat, regional organizations understand better the situation in their responsibility zone and their preventive and peacekeeping mechanisms are better tuned to regional realities.

In a statement of the Security Council chairperson, Argentina as this month’s chair, pointed to the necessity to consolidate the peacekeeper potential of regional organizations and recommended countries to make more active contribution in this area.
