China’s UN ambassador: Russia’s role at UN is vital and should be reckoned with

Li Baodong added that Syria was the biggest challenge at the moment

UNITED NATIONS, July 23 (Itar-Tass) - Russia plays a vital role at the United Nations Security Council and it has to be reckoned with in handling any contemporary challenges, China’s Outgoing U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong told Itar-Tass on Monday. He added that Syria was the biggest challenge at the moment.

"I believe that Russia plays a very vital role in the discussion of all items on the Security Council agenda. It is very difficult to take any actions without enlisting Russia’s support,” the Chinese diplomat, who is quitting his post this week, said.

He said he would continue developing relations with Russia in his new capacity of China’s deputy foreign minister. “China has many friends, including Russia. Our bilateral relations are good and strong. We have always supported Russia on many issues because we are confident that problems should be solved with account taken of mutual interests,” the Chinese diplomat emphasized.
