CHITA, July 17 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive at the 247th multi-service firing range Tsugol of the Eastern Military District, where he will be watching the final phase of large-scale military exercises of the forces of the Central and Eastern Military Districts on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Putin inspected the progress of the military exercises at the training grounds Uspenovsky, where, upon receiving a report from Commander of the troops of the Eastern Military District Konstantin Sidenko, he went up on an observation post and was watching the military exercises from there. Chief of the main combat training department of the Russian Armed Forces Ivan Buvaltsev gave explanations to the president.
After this stage of military exercises Putin accompanied by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and the commander of the Eastern Military District has made a helicopter flight over the area of the military drills.
The combat readiness drill of the troops of the Eastern Military District began on July 13. The formations and military units of the Central and Eastern Military Districts, the Pacific Fleet and the Long-Range and Military Transport Aviations are involved in the drills.
The main goal of the military exercises is to check the readiness of the troops in the performance of the assigned tasks and evaluate the level of training of the military staff, technical preparedness and the level of arming of the military units with weapons and military hardware.
The total numerical strength of the troops involved in the combat readiness drills makes up to 160,000 servicemen, about 1,000 tanks and combat armoured vehicles, 130 warplanes and helicopters of long-range, military transport, fighter, bombing and army aviation, as well as 70 warships and vessels. The military formations are drilling the training combat tasks at 17 firing ranges, and the warships of the Pacific Fleet in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan (the East Sea). The 35th and 36th Armies, the 18th machine gun-artillery division were involved in a fire drill, the drills of driving and fire control at the firing ranges of the Eastern Military District within the preparations to the tactical exercises. The warships of the landing formation of the Pacific Fleet are drilling practical actions within the formation and are performing an artillery fire drill. The aviation of the 3rd Command of the Air Force of the Air Defence Troops is also performing the training and combat tasks.
