SARATOV, July 12 (Itar-Tass) - Local authorities in contact with law-enforcement services, public organizations and ethnic communities do everything possible for stabilization of the situation in the city of Pugachev, the Saratov Region, where the situation remained tense for some days after a Chechen teenager killed a former paratrooper.
The Saratov Region's Governor Valery Radayev said in an interview to Itar-Tass that the situation in Pugachev was under control. It is calm. The local and regional authorities have done everything for normal functioning of city services, and police ensure public order, he said.
Radayev noted there was no panic in the city. A dialogue with local residents is organized. The main task is to maintain peace and prevent provocations. The authorities' priorities are safety and well-being of people, he added.
Specialists from the Russian Investigative Committee (SK) are working in the city. The head of the SK main department, Alexander Shchukin, receives citizens.
Russian presidential envoy to the Volga Federal District Mikhail Babich and members of the Russian Public Chamber, who met with local residents, joined in the settlement of the situation, which caused a public outcry.
The tragedy in Pugachev and the recent developments should be separated. They are not of the same character. Everybody must realize it, the governor believes.
The regional authorities have asked deputies of all levels to take more active action in explanatory work. Many meetings were held with local residents. Their complaints are under consideration. All the promises given to them will be fulfilled, Radayev assured.
The SK main department opens its reception room in Pugachev soon. Special mailboxes are placed there for complaints and proposals, including anonymous ones. A reception room of the Public Chamber will also open in the city. It is a joint project of the Saratov Region and the Public Chamber. Pugachev residents will have an open access directly to Moscow, to the federal level. The Public Chamber will take up some of the problems.
According to reports from Pugachev, tension eased in the city. Citizens are busy with their routine things. The situation is calm in the streets. All the offices and stores work as normal. Police in close contact with local authorities actively work to stabilize the situation.
