MOSCOW, July 9. /ITAR-TASS reporters Olga Svistunova, Natalya Barinova /. Vladimir Urin, former head of the Moscow Musical Theater of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, has been appointed Director General of the Bolshoi Theatre. This was announced today by the Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medina at a meeting with the staff of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Urin replaces Anatoly Iksanov, who has been chairing the Bolshoi since 2000.

Vladimir Urin is a Honored Artist of Russia. He started his career in 1973, becoming director of the Kirov Theatre for Young Spectators. In 1981, he moved to Moscow, where he headed the study of children's puppet theaters of the All-Russian Theatrical Society, an organization engaged in specialized creative laboratories, workshops and festivals.

In 1987-1996 he was twice elected secretary of the Russian Theatre Union. Among the major projects undertaken by Urin in these years are the International Festival of Theatre Schools ‘Podium’, the Russian-American Theater Festival ‘Baikal – Michigan’ and others.

Urin has designed and implemented the idea of establishing a national professional award in the field of theater – ‘Golden Mask’. Since 1995, he was Director General of the Musical Theatre of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko. Under his leadership was developed and brought to life the idea of a radical reconstruction of the theater building.

Since 1997, Urin has been Director General of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance, held in collaboratively with cultural centers and embassies of European countries, Canada and the United States.

Urin is also Head of the Department of Management and Economics of the Performing Arts School of the Moscow Art Theatre /MHAT/, holds the rank of professor.
