YAROSLAVL, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - Yaroslavl Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov was elected at the top of the list of candidates for deputies of the Yaroslavl Regional Duma, leader of the Yaroslavl regional office of the Civic Platform Party Mikhail Pisarets said on Sunday.
“A general conference of the regional branch has just ended. The participants, who approved the common list of candidates, elected Yevgeny Robertovich Urlashov as the leader of this list,” Pisarets said.
The list of the candidates in the regional legislature from Civic Platform includes 50 people.
“I support your decision,” leader of the Civic Platform Party Mikhail Prokhorov, who arrived in Yaroslavl for the purpose, said. He noted that he finds the decision of the regional office “politically correct.”
“A successful performance of our party at the elections will be the best support for Zhenya,” Prokhorov added.
Prokhorov has earlier filed a request in the Yaroslavl court not to arrest Yaroslavl Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov.
The Yaroslavl mayor is being kept under arrest. He was detained overnight to July 3 on the accusation of taking a bribe. The detectives found that the mayor and his subordinates have been extorting from the director of a Yaroslavl company a bribe of 14 million roubles from the money transfer to the company for the works done, threatening to underpay the works over a next contract.
Leader of the Civic Platform Party Mikhail Prokhorov believes that the investigation in the criminal case against arrested Yaroslavl Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov should be transparent. “I want the investigation to be transparent. So, if the secret of investigation exists, it should be observed. Dubious videos in the Internet are also a violation of human rights,” Prokhorov said at a meeting of the Civic Platform regional office.
“No one can accuse anyone before a court verdict is passed,” he said. “We want to receive a clear answer from the law enforcement agencies: why do they use the law as the special one for them?” the business tycoon said.
Prokhorov believes that a possible resignation of Yaroslavl Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov can be taken as his weakness in current conditions.
“In the situation, where he happened to be, it will be the demonstration of weakness and the recognition that he is to blame for the crime,” Prokhorov said.
In his view, if Urlashov had been at large, it would have been possible to consider other variants.
Prokhorov pledged that the Civic Platform Party will give the legal support to all detainees over the criminal case against Yaroslavl Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov. “We will help to all and will give a legal, juridical and lawyer’s protection to them. All our associates, comrades will receive the assistance, which we can give,” Prokhorov said.
In his words, the party will not leave Urlashov’s daughter without any help.
