LDPR nominates Stepashin, Golikova to position of Audit Chamber chairman

Under new rules, the Audit Chamber should be formed till October 1, 2013

MOSCOW, June 29 (Itar-Tass) - The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has nominated incumbent head of the Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin and presidential adviser Tatyana Golikova to the position of the Audit Chamber head.

“The LDPR faction in the State Duma has decided to nominate the incumbent head, Sergei Stepashin, and Tatyana Golikova,” State Duma deputy speaker Igor Lebedev told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

“We believe that both candidates are worthy to be nominated,” Lebedev explained.

Thus, Golikova was considered a strong financial expert. “We liked her work on the post of deputy finance minister,” Lebedev said.

He said the LDPR’s proposal “creates a healthy competition”. The Duma deputy speaker recalled that it was the president who would take a final decision.

On June 26, the State Duma Committee for the Budget and Taxes recommended the lower house’s council to fix June 29 as a time limit to nominate candidates for the position of Audit Chamber head. Earlier, mass media named Golikova and Stepashin as possible candidates.

In compliance with the new law, “On the Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation”, the chairman of the Audit Chamber is appointed by the State Duma for the period of six years on the president’s motion. The same person cannot take office more than two terms. The candidates are submitted to the State Duma by the president on the factions’ proposals. The president is right to recommend one of the nominees or nominate his own candidate.

Under new rules, the Audit Chamber should be formed till October 1, 2013.
