TEHRAN, June 15 (Itar-Tass) - Former Supreme National Security Council Secretary Hassan Rowhani has been elected the new president of Iran, the Interior Ministry’s election headquarters said on Saturday, June 15.

After two-thirds (32,189,000) of ballots had been counted several hours ago, Rowhani was leading with 51.1 percent (16.4 million) of votes.

He was followed by Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher (15.83 percent); Supreme National Security Council Secretary and Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili (11.46 percent); and Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council Mohsen Rezaee (11.34 percent).

The other two candidates - former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and ex- Minister of Post and Telegraph and Telephone Mohammad Gharazi - were trailing far behind.

According to the authorities, the presidential election showed a high turnout with 80 percent of more than 50 million Iranians eligible to vote coming to the polling stations to cast their ballots.
