MOSCOW, June 6 (Itar-Tass) - The Moscow City Duma will hold an extraordinary meeting at 10:00 Moscow time, on Friday, June 7, to set the date of early mayoral elections, the press service of the Moscow City Duma reported on Thursday.
According to the law on the elections of the mayor and vice-mayor of Moscow, the Moscow City Duma announces Moscow early mayoral elections in case of early termination of their powers. The day of elections in this case is the first Sunday after the expiry of three months since the day of termination of the powers of the Moscow mayor. This day will be September 8 - the common election day in Russia.
After the Moscow City Duma sets the day of mayoral elections the Moscow City Election Commission is to prepare the information on the number of voters in the Russian capital to determine the number of signatures needed for the support of other candidates for mayor, Speaker of the Moscow City Duma Vladimir Platonov told reporters on Thursday.
Within a month after the publication of this information the candidates for mayor that decided to run in the elections are to gather and produce all necessary documents in the Moscow City Election Commission. According to the law, the committee is given ten days to check the documents and the authenticity of the signatures of voters. Upon the expiry of this term the Moscow City Election Commission should register the candidates or give a motivated refusal.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted the resignation of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and instructed him to fulfil the duties of the Moscow mayor until early mayoral elections. On Tuesday, the participants in a meeting of the Moscow Public Chamber put forward an initiative to hold early mayoral elections on the common election day in Russia on September 8. Sobyanin agreed with this proposal and filed his resignation letter to the president, informing him about his intention to run in early mayoral elections.
