Fedotov hopes human rights council members to meet with Putin in August

“The people in penitentiaries were sentenced to imprisonment, and not to suffering and humiliation,” he said

MOSCOW, June 1 (Itar-Tass) - The head of the presidential human rights council, Mikhail Fedotov, hopes that HRC members will be able to meet with the head of state in August.

Fedotov told Itar-Tass on Friday “the main issues will concern a reform of the penitentiaries system.”

“The people in penitentiaries were sentenced to imprisonment, and not to suffering and humiliation,” he said. “They have their rights, too, the right to life and to health care,” Fedotov said.

“Most likely some other topical problems related to the development of civil society and human rights protection will be raised,” he added.

Also, Fedotov said that at Friday’s working meeting (closed to the press) many HRC members voiced concern over the Investigative Committee’s probe into the activity of scientists who participated in the public scrutiny of the so-called second YUKOS case, held at the HRC request.

“No document was produced today, but it may appear,” the HRC chief said.
