BELGRADE, May 24 (Itar-Tass) - Belgrade is thankful to Moscow for its principled position on the problem of Kosovo and Metohija, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic told Itar-Tass on Friday, ahead of the Serbian visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We are grateful to Russia for its principled position, its refusal to recognize the so-called independence of Kosovo and Metohija,” said the Serbian leader. “Russia’s support on the international arena, where Moscow stands for a peaceful solution to this problem on the principles of respecting Serbia’s sovereignty and on the basis of steps that would be similarly acceptable for both parties, is important for Serbia.”

Kosovo and Metohija is an autonomous area within the Republic of Serbia. In 2008, its Albanian authorities unanimously proclaimed independence, which by now has been recognized by 90 world countries.
