PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, May 20 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake with a magintude of 6.4 occurred off the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula on Monday morning in the Pacific, an official at the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass.
The earth jolt was recorded at 06:44, local time. The epicenter of the quake was in the ocean, 174 km east of Petropovavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The focus of the tremblor was at a depth of 40 km beneath the seabed.
Residents of the territorial center felt earth tremors of 3-4 points. There were no reports about victims or damage. There is no tsunami threat.
Seismologists go on monitoring the area where an upsurge in seismic activity has been observed: there have occurred more than ten earth jolts with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.9.
