Floating platform catches fire in Udmurtia, two killed

There are 14 tons of diesel fuel on board, but fire brigades managed to prevent the flames from reaching the hazardous cargo

IZHEVSK May 14 (Itar-Tass) - A fire on board a floating platform reported at 6. 45 am Moscow time Tuesday has been extinguished.

A crane on board the platform caught fire near a mooring berth in the village of Karakulino on the Kama river. The fire spread to 150 square meters. There are 14 tons of diesel fuel on board, but fire brigades managed to prevent the flames from reaching the hazardous cargo.

A crane operator, 62 and a 52-year old woman, who had worked on board as a cook, died in the fire.

The flames were confined in an approximately an hour since the fire began. The open flames had been extinguished by 9.37 am Tuesday. To examine the platform from the inside experts "tore the platform open" from the outside and "made a foaming attack."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is going on.
