Over 160 men with bats, guns and knives detained near Surgut

The police say they have prevented possible riots

MOSCOW, May 5 (Itar-Tass) - The police have detained more than 160 people, mostly young men, with bats, handguns and knives who were heading for the city of Surgut, a spokesman for the Khanty-Mansi police department told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

According to the spokesman, traffic police stopped a motorcade heading for Surgut from Nizhnevartovsk and Nefteyugansk. “More than 160 people and some 99 motor cars were detained. The police searched the vehicles and seized a big number of bats, several non-lethal handguns and knives,” the spokesman said.

The police say they have prevented possible riots.
