St PETERSBURG, May 1 (Itar-Tass) - Police detained about twenty individuals at 13.00 hrs on Wednesday after a May Day demonstration along Nevsky Prospect and on Palace Square where the United Russia party held its rally, the police of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region told Itar-Tass.
“A group of 20 individuals tried to break up public order on Palace Square where a sanctioned action was taking place,” the police said. “Officers stopped the violations. Detainees have been brought to police stations to face penalties for administrative offences.”
The police do not specify what section of the political spectrum the detainees belong to, although the eyewitnesses claimed they are anarchists.
