Russia, US can resolve existing problems – ex-Soviet envoy to US

Speaking about these consultations Bessmertnykh noted that their delegates do not define politics, they simply act as consultants and advisors

MOSCOW, March 31 (Itar-Tass) – Former Soviet ambassador to the United States and foreign minister Alexander Bessmertnykh has expressed confidence that Moscow and Washington face no complexities that can remain unresolved.

“I would not overestimate the complexities. Over the past decades we’ve been facing such complexities,” he told reporters ahead of the meeting of Russian and US ex-ambassadors at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s mansion in central Moscow on Sunday. “Our countries will find the way out of those problems we are now facing.”

One of the tasks of the ambassadors’ meeting is to search for variants that will help Russia and the United States to get rid of current difficulties, as it brings together professional diplomats who lived through the Cold War.

Speaking about these consultations Bessmertnykh noted that their delegates do not define politics, they simply act as consultants and advisors.

“But we possess rather high professional knowledge that fortunately do not vanish,” he said. “Experience is that significant component that should never be thrown overboard.”

Bessmertnykh noted that diplomats would adopt a joint statement after the meeting. The mechanism of such meetings has already turned into good practice and this experience should be applied in relations with other countries. In particular, he stressed the need for organizing such a meeting between Russian and Chinese ambassadors.
