Vologda road accident with bus belonged to Petersburg orphanage # 8 caused by truck driving into oncoming lane – police

Six people died, including both drivers, and another 23 were injured, seven persons are in critical condition: three adults and four children

ST PETERSBURG, March 28 (Itar-Tass) – The road accident in the Vologda region which claimed six lives was caused by a truck driving into oncoming lane. The bus caught fire after the collision, regional police reported.

Six people died, including both drivers, and another 23 were injured in the head-on collision on Thursday.

The bus belonged to Petersburg orphanage # 8.

The bus was carrying 25 children and six adults. The accident occurred at the 110th kilometer of the Vologda-Novaya Ladoga highway /10 kilometers from the town of Cherepovets/ near the village of Vokhta at 11:15, Moscow time.

Earlier reports said a helicopter with medical personnel and officials had flown to the town of Cherepovets where the victims of the Vologda region bus crash were hospitalized.

The helicopter was sent by the northwestern regional center of the Emergency Situations Ministry /EMERCOM/. It brought to Cherepovets resuscitation experts, psychologists and Vyborg district administration officials.

"The helicopter took off from the village of Murino near St Petersburg. On Thursday evening, four educators of St Petersburg orphanage # 8 will be sent to Cherepovets by train," an EMERCOM official said.

The office of the city's children's ombudswoman Svetlana Agapitova told Tass that four children injured in the crash were in critical condition.

"At present, seven persons are in critical condition: three adults and four children. The other victims are in satisfactory condition; updates will follow," the ombudswoman's office said. Twenty-one children are now being treated for injuries in Cherepovets hospitals.
