Russian diplomats not planning to leave Syria – Embassy

The United Nations earlier announced the decision to withdraw at least half of its personnel from Syria following the latest deterioration of the situation

MOSCOW, March 25 (Itar-Tass) – Russian diplomats are not planning to leave Syria in the near future, a Russian Embassy official in Damascus told Itar-Tass by telephone on Monday, March 25.

“Representatives of the Embassy have no information about any imminent evacuation of the Russian diplomats,” he said.

The United Nations earlier announced the decision to withdraw at least half of its personnel from Syria following the latest deterioration of the situation in the country, including Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for the Syrian Crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi’s mission in Damascus. It will be transferred to Cairo or Lebanon.

There are about 100 U.N. personnel working in Syria now.
