Prokhorov says he is sorry for refusing to run for Moscow Region’s governor

Earlier, Prokhorov said that his party was considering several candidates

MOSCOW, March 5 (Itar-Tass) – It looks like the leader of the Civil Platform, big business tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov, is already sorry about his earlier decision to stay away from the election of the Moscow Region’s governor.

“The public opinion studies center VTSIOM says I would have had chances in the Moscow Region. Too bad I decided not to run,” Prokhorov wrote down in his microblog in Twitter.

Earlier, Prokhorov said that his party was considering several candidates.

“As far as the election of the Moscow Region’s governor is concerned, I can say that we are in consultations,” he told the media in the middle of last month. The politician pointed out that he was not going to participate himself. The press-service of Civil Platform has confirmed to Itar-Tass that “this decision of his remains unchanged.”

In the meantime, according to VTSIOM findings published on Tuesday, Prokhorov would have placed second in the Moscow Region’s gubernatorial election. Acting Governor Andrei Vorobyov leads the election rating, with likely support from 39 percent of the respondents. Prokhorov is second but way behind, with nine percent.

At the same time, as the opinion poll has found, the soft rating, which also included the share of respondents permitting the possibility they might support some candidate Vorobyov had 61 percent, and Prokhorov, 31 percent.

“How do you like that?” Prokhorov asked his internet readership.

The election of the Moscow Region’s new governor is due in September 2013. The governor’s seat has been vacant since Sergei Shoigu was appointed defense minister.

Andrei Vorobyov, the leader of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, took over as acting governor.
