Putin congratulates Gorbachev on his birthday

MOSCOW, March 2 (Itar-Tass) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who now heads the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies, on his birthday, the Kremlin press service said on Saturday.

In his telegram Putin pointed to Gorbachev’s “fruitful public and research activities and his active participation in popular charitable and educational projects” that rightly earned him deep respect.

“It is significant that you give constant attention to the implementation of important international cooperation initiatives, and that your multifaceted work is aimed at promoting Russia’s international prestige,” the message read.
