Medvedev decrees creation of national park on Onega Peninsula

The national part will be controlled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment

MOSCOW, March 2 (Itar-Tass) – Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree to create a national park, Onezhskoye Pomorye, the government’s press service said on Saturday.

The national park will occupy the area of 201,668 hectares on the Onega Peninsula in the Una Bay of the White Sea. It is created on the territory of the Arkhangelsk region to protect its pristine forests of northern taiga, a habitat for rare and endangered flora and fauna species that had been placed on the Russian Red Data Book and to protect culture and lifestyle of Pomory, White Sea coast-dwelllers.

The national part will be controlled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
