MOSCOW, February 28 (Itar-Tass) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Konstantin Ilkovsky acting governor of Russia’s TransBaikal Territory until a new governor is elected, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday.
Ilkovsky is a member of the Russian State Duma lower parliament house. He was elected to the State Duma with the A Just Russia party and represents the TransBaikal Territory.
“Taking this decision, the president was not guided by his party membership – Ilkovsky is affiliated with no party – but rather by his administrative and personal faculties, and his record of work in the region,” Peskov noted.
The term of office of the incumbent governor of the TransBaikal Territory, Ravil Geniatulin, expires on March 1, 2013. Gubernatorial elections will be held on September 8. Until that day, the territory will be governed by an acting governor appointed by the president.
The TransBaikal Territory was established on March 1, 2008 after the unification of the Chita region and the Aginsk-Buryat autonomous area. The two Russian constituent regions merged on the basis of the results of a referendum held there on March 11, 2007.
