Merkel urges Russia to step up pressure on Syria

The chancellor regretted that the U.N. Security Council members could not reach agreement on ways to solve the Syrian problem

BERLIN, February 23 (Itar-Tass) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Russia to increase pressure on Damascus in order to make Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign.

“We maintain permanent contacts with Russia so that we put pressure on the Syrian regime. It is necessary to find a political solution in order to form a new government in Syria,” Merkel said in her traditional address to German citizens on Saturday.

The chancellor regretted that the U.N. Security Council members could not reach agreement on ways to solve the Syrian problem.
