MOSCOW, February 21 (Itar-Tass) – A famous film director, People’s Artist of Russia Alexei German Sr. died after a heavy illness in St. Petersburg overnight to Thursday, his son Alexei German Jr. said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Thursday.
He was being treated at the intensive therapy ward for two days, the doctors of the Military Medical Academy were fighting for his life, but the disease turned out to be lethal, a source in the film studio Lenfilm told Itar-Tass. The date of his funerals will be reported later.
A world renowned film director, screenwriter, actor and film producer Alexei Yuriyevich German was born on July 20, 1938.
This film director is one of remarkable modern film masters. He graduated from Grigory Kozintsev’s filmmaking school, worked as a theatrical director, his brilliant talent was fully embodied in the films, which were made at the film studio Lenfilm, where he worked since 1964. German’s films The Seventh Companion, Twenty Days Without War, The Trial on the Road, My Friend Ivan Lapshin and Khrustalev, My Car! became bright events in the filmmaking of the country. For the last few years the film master has worked on the film “It is Difficult to be the God” based on a famous science fiction and philosophical novel of the Strugatskiye brothers.
Alexei German is a laureate of the Nika Award in 1999. In 2001 the French cinema magazine Cahiers du Cinema put German’s film Khrustalev, My Car! on the list of 50 best films, which were screened for the last 50 years.
The film director is awarded with the Fourth Degree Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
