Thefts account for half of crimes in Moscow - prosecutor

Thefts accounted for 57 percent of all reported crimes in the city a year

MOSCOW, February 2 (Itar-Tass) - More than half of the crimes committed in Moscow are thefts, the city’s prosecutor, Sergei Kudeneyev, said at an enlarged board meeting on Friday.

Thefts accounted for 57 percent of all reported crimes in the city a year. Last year there were 100,000 of them, 7.2 percent more than in the previous year.

Kudeneyev also complained about low crime detection. Last year only 30 percent of grave crimes and 34 percent of very grave crimes were solved. "The rate of detection of thefts is still lower," he said.

Last year Moscow saw an increase in the number of frauds, thefts and robberies. The rate of street crimes increased by almost a quarter. The number of thefts and frauds committed by teenagers went up.
