Opposition activists to come to Putin’s reception office on Jan 26 to urge release of political prisoners

Earlier, the Council planned to hold an action in support of all political prisoners

MOSCOW, January 22 (Itar-Tass) – Russia’s opposition activists plan to come to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reception office on January 26 to file a petition urging to release all those who were arrested over the May 6, 2012 disorders on Moscow’s Bolotnaya Square, Petr Tsarkov, a member of the Opposition Coordination Council, told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

“Today, the Council’s working group took a decision to declare January 26 as a Day of Memory and Solidarity. We call on people to come to the presidential administration, the presidential reception office in Ilyinka Street at 14:00 Moscow time to file petitions demanding an investigation into Alexander Dolmatov’s suicide, a release of those arrested in the Bolotnaya case, and a probe into the actions of the authorities on Bolotnaya Square on May 6,” he said.

He stressed however that the Opposition Coordination Council plans to stage no action on January 26 but only to file petitions.

Earlier, the Council planned to hold an action in support of all political prisoners. The working group was tasked to choose the format of such action. Some of the Council members however said they were against an unauthorized action.

“The working group today did not discuss a possible format and a date for a mass protest action planned for spring,” Tsarkov said.

Alexander Dolmatov, an activist of the Other Russia opposition party, was found dead at a refugee facility in Rotterdam where he had been taken last Wednesday after the Dutch immigration authorities refused to grant him political asylum in the Netherlands.
