Two improved-project Boreis to be laid down at Sevmash this year

Submarines will have improved characteristics to be undetectable and noiseless

MOSCOW, January 12 (Itar-Tass) - The fifth strategic missile undersea cruiser Alexander Suvorov of the improved 955A project (code Borei-A) will be laid down at the Sevmash plant in Severodvinsk in July this year, and the sixth submarine cruiser of the same project of the Mikhail Kutuzov class in November, an informed source of the Russian defence industrial complex told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

The decision is taken to start the construction of the fifth Borei in late July. The event will be timed to coincide with Russian Navy Day to be marked on July 28. The submarine (its plant number is 205) is expected to be named in honour of great Russian military leader Duke Alexander Suvorov. It is a "working name" for the time being, the source said.

The sixth Borei-A of the same improved 955A project is planned to be laid down at Sevmash in November this year under the name of other famous Russian military leader Duke Mikhail Kutuzov. It is also a "working name", he added.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu on January 10, after the participation in the ceremony to accept the head strategic missile undersea cruiser Yuri Dolgoruky of Project 955 (code Borei) in Severodvinsk, told reporters that the Russian Navy would receive after the nuclear-powered submarine seven more strategic missile Borei-class submarines and seven multi-purpose Yasen-class submarines, in accordance with the 2020 state armament programme. The same day, when talking with crewmembers of the Yuri Dolgoruky, the defence minister said that Boreis would be built ahead of schedule and the Navy would receive seven more strategic submarines of the class before 2018.

According to the Main Navy Staff, strategic missile nuclear-powered submarines of the improved 955A project, as compared to the 955-project Boreis Yuri Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh, will have improved characteristics to be undetectable and noiseless, better acoustic characteristics and will have more armaments. Each will carry 20 Bulava missiles.
