Chinese Foreign Ministry: Syria’s conflict parties must adhere to joint peace plan

China has repeatedly emphasized that the Syrian crisis can be settled only through political negotiations

BEIJING, January 7 (Itar-Tass) — China believes Syria’s conflicting parties should adhere to a jointly adopted peace plan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Monday in his comments on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s proposed peace plan.

“China keeps an active and transparent position in this issue,” the diplomat said. “China calls on the Syrian authorities and opposition forces to stop the armed confrontation as soon as possible proceeding from the basic interests of the state and people.”

China has repeatedly emphasized that the Syrian crisis can be settled only through political negotiations under condition that the conflicting parties adhere to the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and agreements fixed in the Geneva communique, Hong said.
