VLADIVOSTOK, January 7 (Itar-Tass) — Severe frosts gripped the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on Christmas. Air temperature plunged to 50 degrees below zero, Celsius, by Monday morning in six inhabited areas of the Republic. The heaviest frosts have set in in Oimyakon Settlement (52 degrees), in Ust-Nera Settlement (51), in the city of Verkhoyansk and in Tompo, Chyappara, and Ytyk-Kyuyol Settlements (50 degrees below zero), Roshydromet (Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring) reported.
Frosts with air temperatures ranging from 40 to 49 degrees are keeping on in 25 inhabited localities of Yakutia. The rest of the Republic's territory is in the grip of 30-degree frosts, with the exception of Udachny (lucky) and Polyarny (polar) Settlements with 29-degree frosts.
Heavy frosts are being also experienced on Monday on the Chukotka Peninsula, Magadan and Amur Regions, the Jewish Autonomous Region, and in Primorsky (maritime) and Khabarovsk Territories, where air temperatures in towns and settleents are from 30 to 47 degrees.
Nothwithstanding the heavy frosts, folk flocked to Orthodox churches for a Christmas services. Yegor Borisov, president of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and Yakutsk Mayor Aisen Nikolayev celebrated Orthodox Christmas together with parishioners in the Transfiguration Cathedral of Yakutsk where a divine liturgy was recited by Bishop Roman of Yakutsk and Lensk.
