MOSCOW, January 6 (Itar-Tass) — Russia will build three new Voronezh radar stations in 2013, spokesman for the Aerospace Defence Forces, Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin, told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
“The construction of new radars will begin in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Altai Territory and the Orenburg region,” he said.
New radar stations having better combat and performance characteristics will allow Russia’s missile warning system to control not only ballistic targets and space objects, but also aerodynamic targets.
“Modernization of space facilities of the missile warning system is related to the creation of a united space system of detection and battle management,” he said.
In 2012 alert forces of Russia’s missile warning system detected around 40 launches of foreign and domestic ballistic missiles and satellites.
At present, Voronezh-DM and Voronezh-M radar stations entered into service in the Kaliningrad region, the Leningrad region and near Irkutsk in Siberia. Tests of Voronezh-DM were completed in the Krasnodar region, southern Russia, where the radar station will become operational in 2013.
Active development of Russia’s missile warning system will allow to detect all ballistic missile launches from the Russian territory and to control all missile threat directions, Zolotukhin said.
