TOKYO, January 1 (Itar-Tass) —— The DPRK’s leader Kim Jong-un in his New Year address urged his nation to develop space technologies and to strengthen the country’s power.
The Supreme Leader of the Republic made his greeting verbally, which has not happened over 19 years, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said on Tuesday.
Former leader Kim Jong Il issued only written New Year greetings, the agency said.
In mid-December, the republic made a successful launch of a rocket with a satellite from the Shohei cosmodrome at the north-west coast. The launch caused a negative reaction from the international community, which considers it a direct violation of two UN Security Council’s resolutions. Pyongyang, in its turn, insists on its right to the use the outer space "for peaceful purposes."
This year, North Korea has entered the 102nd year of the Juche chronology. After the death of Kim Jong-il on December 17, 2011, his full follower became Kim Jong-un - the country’s third leader of the Kim dynasty. Kim the third is very different in behaviour from his father and rather resembles his grandfather - the founder and eternal President Kim Il Sung. During his inspection tours of the country, the current leader is trying to communicate with people informally. Many Western analysts tend to believe Kim Jong-un is a reformer.
