MAKHACHKALA, December 29 (Itar-Tass) —— Gunmen were killed in two special operations in Dagestan.
The first operation took place in the village of Chontaul, the Kizilyurt district, and the other in Makhachkala on Friday, the republic's Interior Ministry reported on Saturday.
Members of illegal armed groups were blocked in a house in the village. They opened fire in response to the order to surrender. Nobody of the police was hurt.
Rasul Kugiyev, born in 1969, and his wife Rasiyat Kugiyeva, born in 1985, were killed by the retaliatory fire. When the site was examined, a Kalashnikov gun, a magazine with 12 cartridges, a magazine with 30 7.62-mm-caliber cartridges and an F-1 grenade were found there.
On Friday evening, gunmen were blocked in a flat in a nine-storey building at Magomedtagirov Street in Makhachkala. The blocked gunmen refused to surrender and at 19:20 Moscow time opened fire. At about 22:00, an unidentified person fired a pistol at the policemen in the cordon. One policeman was wounded in the head, and another OMON policeman received a foot wound. The attacker was killed by the retaliatory fire. His identity has yet to be established.
The active phase of the operation in Makhachkala was suspended until the morning.
