St.PETERSBURG December 27 (Itar-Tass) —— Maestro Vladimir Spivakov - the People's Artist of the Soviet Union, has starred at a gala Christmas concert held at the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Society on Thursday. Spivakov conducted the Virtuosos of Moscow chamber orchestra which performed the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and piano concert No. 17.
A Big Academic Choir - The Masters of Choral Singing under the Russian state music teleradio center, and prominent Russian and foreign singers took part.
Mozart as a man of genius is for all times, bringing eternal values in his music, Spivakov said. As for the choice of the requiem for a Christmas concert on New Year's Eve, Spivakov explained that he laid the emphasis on the word "Christmas". The story is sad, but it is full of light, Spivakov added.
Chief artistic Director of St.Petersburg Philharmonic Society Yuri Temirkanov approved the requiem performed at the Christmas concert. People might find it very useful to listen to Mozart's requiem on New Year's Eve, Temirkanov noted.
St. Petersburg, where Maestro Spivakov studied at a music school under a conservatoire in his school years, occupies a special niche in his heart. St. Petersburg is associated in his mind with long years of friendship with world famous theater artistic director Georgy Tovstonogov and the company of the Big Drama Theater with which the Spivakov chamber orchestra even once performed after a play.
The outgoing year brought another remarkable award to Vladimir Teodorovich Spivakov - the Tovstonogov Prize awarded for an outstanding contribution to the development of theater and music art.
Maestro Spivakov will give his final concert in the outgoing year with the celebrated Peruvian tenor, Juan Diego Florez starring, in Moscow on December 31.
