Putin congratulates leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party on premiership

MOSCOW, December 26 (Itar-Tass) — Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Shinzo Abe on the election as Japan’s prime minister, the Kremlin press service reported on Wednesday.

In the greetings message, Putin said Russia “seeks to continue the active joint work on further intensification of bilateral political, trade, economic, scientific, technical, humanitarian and other cooperation in order to ensure stability and security in the Asia-Pacific Region and in the entire world”.

Putin also congratulated the Japanese prime minister on coming New Year.

Abe, 58, leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party, got a convincing victory at the general parliamentary elections. On December 26, he was elected Japan’s prime minister.

A total of 328 deputies out of 480 parliamentarians voted for Abe’s candidature. Abe’s party plays the decisive role while appointing the prime minister.

Abe will be the seventh prime minister over the past six years. He took this position in 2006-2007. But he was forced to resign after a series of scandals in his government.
